  My favorite animals are chimpanzees.

Would you like to learn about them?

  4

  Chimpanzees live in forests

  in central Africa.

They spend most of their time

  in the treetops.

Adults are about four feet tall and weight between 55 - 100 pounds.

They can live up to 50 years.

  7

When chimpanzees walk on the ground, they usually walk on all fours.

They can walk on two legs like humans for as far as a mile.

  8

Chimps have thick bodies with long arms that hang bellow their knees, short legs, no tails, and opposable thumbs.

Because they have thumbs, they can pick up objects and use “tools.”

  11

Most of a chimp’s body is covered with long black hair.

Their face, ears, fingers, and toes are bare.

They use their long arms to swing from branch to branch.

In the morning, chimpanzees will come down from their treetop nests and begin searching for food.

Chimpanzees eat up to 80 different kinds of plants and sometimes will eat insects, eggs and meat.

They usually pick fruit with their hands and eat berries off the stem with their lips. They also eat buds, blossoms and leaves.

  16

Chimpanzees are very clever. They use sticks to get insects out of their nests. They also use leaves to scoop up water.

  19

  20

Chimpanzees are intelligent, social, curious and noisy animals.

  23

Chimpanzees live in groups of 10 to 100 animals, called communities.

They protect each other from intruders and will sometimes forage for food together.

  They enjoy each other’s company.

  24

Chimpanzees touch each other a lot and sometimes even kiss when the see each other.

  27

  28

They spend time grooming each other and holding hands.

Adult chimpanzees will often have a special friend they spend a lot of time with.

Females usually give birth to one baby. They baby chimpanzee will ride on its mothers back by holding onto her fur until it is two years old.

Mothers give their babies a lot of attention.

Female chimpanzees help babysit other babies in their community and older chimpanzees show a lot of patience with the young, energetic chimps.

  31

  32

Chimpanzees use more than 30 different alarm calls and greeting vocalizations to communicate with their community.

The food calls—grunts, barks, and hoots—let other chimpanzees know that food has been found.

Sometimes the calls can be heard up to 2 miles away.
